(EN) The severed hands policy involved amputating village men in the Congo Free State as a warning for their inefficient rubber production. The thousands of villages and millions of villagers, victims of this barbaric treatment that lasted for decades, fueled the western rubber boom of the late 19th century, a consequence of the democratization of the automobile and the bicycle.

(FR) La politique des mains coupées impliquait l’amputation des mains des hommes du village en guise d’avertissement pour leur production de caoutchouc inefficace. Les millions de villageois victimes de ce traitement barbare, qui durait depuis des décennies, ont alimenté le boom occidental du caoutchouc de la fin du XIXe siècle, conséquence de la démocratisation de l’automobile et du vélo.
