(EN) Jean Hubert Biermans, philanthropist behind the prestigious Fondation Biermans-Lapôtre, came from a very modest background, before becoming a wealthy industrialist in the paper industry. The Foundation was his contribution to universal education, a privilege of which he did not benefit from but deemed crucial for future generations. A pivotal moment in his impressive career, usually overlooked in his narrative, was his work as a leading engineer in the construction of the Léopoldville-Matadi railway in the early 20th century. A project that costed the lives and exploitation of thousands of colonized. This painting aims to embody this tension in the legacy of Hubert Biermans. A legacy of philanthropy and altruism, with roots found in the exploitation of supposedly inferior humans.

(FR) Hubert Biermans, philanthrope derrière la prestigieuse Fondation Biermans-Lapôtre, est issu d’un milieu très modeste, avant de devenir un riche industriel. Pour lui la Fondation était sa contribution à l’éducation universelle, un privilège dont il a été privé et jugé crucial pour les générations futures. Un moment charnière de son impressionnante carrière, généralement négligé dans son récit, fut son travail en tant qu’ingénieur de premier plan dans la construction des chemins de fer Léopoldville-Matadi au début du XXe siècle. Un projet qui a coûté la vie de milliers d’habitants. Ce tableau vise à incarner cette tension dans l’héritage d’Hubert Biermans. Un héritage de philanthropie et d’altruisme, avec des racines trouvées dans l’exploitation d’humains prétendument inférieurs.
